Fast start for the little guys
LYONS BROOK - Dylan Hiltz snagged a rebound in the paint, and waited a second before making his next move. Then,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the West Pictou Wolverines player added an extra bit of muscle to launch the orange object above a cloud of obstacles, off the backboard and through the hoop.
Two points. Baillie Bears as part of their weekend tip-off tournament yesterday, eventually falling 48-37 in the contest.
But what's in a score, really? A whole lot of little performances that made everyone happy to be back on the hard court.
Take Colby Russell, for example. Baillie student emitted a mini-Steve Nash vibe for most of the game, complete with matching haircut and pulled up Nike socks. Of his 16 points,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], many came of the highlight reel variety, even going coast-to-coast on one occasion to lay the ball in for a pair.
Russell's points seemed to come whenever the opposition was mounting a comeback, making his baskets mean more for the Bears. Still,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the New Glasgow resident wasn't taking the credit for the victory.
"We're a good team because everyone's good and us playing together is what makes things work," said Russell, in
Grade 6,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. "Having fun is my favourite part - nothing else particularly stands out."
Clad in red jerseys, the Bears seemed a little quicker to the ball than the scrappy Wolverines. But the home school's hustle and size was enough to keep things close,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and one athlete in particular showed he was a force on the elementary circuit.
Nicholas Mingo, a Grade 6 student, said he never scored a basket last season. That can be rough,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but practice makes perfect, and Mingo was the game's biggest threat down low, making shot-after-shot before the basket.
Sure,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's only the first game of the year and this certainly wasn't the NBA,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but Mingo shot a giddy grin to his mother and father in the first row with every successful hoop.
"I kept looking at my mom and dad," exclaimed Mingo about the reaction. "It was fun,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because I didn't get a (basket) last year. I'm good when the shots come down low,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I need to work on my free throws."
Even missing free throws paid off for Mingo. After a scoring a basket and taking a foul on the play,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he erred on the one-point free-throw attempt, only to grab his own rebound and fire it back through the cylinder for another deuce. Two is, after all, better than one.
Mingo had a definite advantage out there - at five feet, he's a veritable Shaq compared to his compact adversaries. But ask him, and the rest is coming together, too.
The game was close early - actually tied 10-10 in the second quarter- and late,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when the Wolverines tried to claw their way back.
In between,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there was plenty of time for surges on both sides,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and even some advice from the woman in stripes.
A West?Pictou player had his inbound pass thwarted three consecutive times, leaving him at a standstill underneath the basket, unable to break through. One referee whispered to him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and after the consultation, he faked a pass before successfully dishing the ball of to a teammate.
