Australians get stoned,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Australia's tour of Pakistan in late 1982 was wobbly before it even started, with several big names opting to sit it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and next to nothing went right from as soon as Kim Hughes' side landed.
Australia came into the series following a six-month break from Test cricket, while Pakistan were on the roll after a successful tour of England. After three drawn warm-up matches, the three-Test series was ach sided: Pakistan won twice by nine wickets and when by an innings. In between those matches there were two ODIs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], again won by Pakistan.
The Test was delayed two times as Hughes took his side in the middle after boundary fielders were struck by missiles thrown by students. The 2nd time was more severe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as spectators tore on the fencing and invaded the ground,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], creating a 45-minute delay. An angry Hughes threatened to scrap the tour then there. "When a player cannot field on the boundary without being hit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then something serious has to be done to make spectators realise it is wrong,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he explained. "People don't should see international cricket once they become this."
The comments hardly endeared the Australians to the Karachi locals,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it was unfortunate for Hughes' men the final game of the series,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the 3rd ODI, was held at the National Stadium.
A lot more than 30,000 packed in for the match, Pakistan batted and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in searing heat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], made a nice beginning. The problem started after Fifteen minutes, when Geoff Lawson was seen throwing a stone back into the crowd while fielding at long leg. Hughes and also the umpires spoke to him and after lengthy conversations, and a plea from Hughes to the means calm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], decided to keep on.
The continuation was brief. Missiles continued to be thrown from the stands,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and when Lawson was hit about the leg with his team-mates also under fire,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Hughes led his players from the middle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], angrily showing a large rock to the spectators. Pakistan were 39 for 1.
For almost an hour the captains, managers and officials discussed abandoning the overall game but eventually the Australians were persuaded to experience on. Greg Ritchie was hit. Only if they had left was there an announcement made that the game have been abandoned.
Which was the signal for the real trouble to start. That which was by then a mob switched on the police,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], attacking them with stones and seats ripped up in the stands,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and setting light to the canvas awnings used as protection from the sun.
Law enforcement responded with another baton charge,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so when that failed they used tear gas. In the last two decades there have only been three more matches in the National Stadium between the two sides,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the final one being in November 1998.
Executive editor Martin Williamson joined the Wisden website in the planning procedures in 2001 after neglecting to make his millions online boom when managing editor of Sportal. Before he was in control of Sky Sports On the internet and helped launch and run Sky News Online. Having a preference for all things old (except his wife and children),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he's recently confounded colleagues by displaying an uncharacteristic fondness for Twenty20 cricket. His enthusiasm for the game is sadly not matched by his ability, but he remains believing that he might be a late developer and perseveres with the hope of an England call-up together with his middle-order batting and non-spinning offbreaks. He is now managing editor of ESPN EMEA Digital Group as well as his Cricinfo responsibilities.

India's batsmen are often unstoppable in Rajkot-like conditions. A primary reason for their failed chase is that age-old conundrum in Indian one-day cricket: whether to opt for seven specialist batsmen or otherwise
