I've been on the ground in Collie for a few days and have met my fair share of big characters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Hit the MORE tab to meet them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The BMX brigade are a tight-night bunch with their own lingo. I was a bit nervous walking up to a pack of 20 odd tough looking teenagers but luckily I was wearing the uniform,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tight black jeans and fat sneakers.
According to one of the boys my shoes were 'Boss,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].' The boys have their own lingo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. If something is cool then it's 'A Boss' or just 'Boss,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].' Accordinng to the boys it's a reference to one of their favourite BMX films,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
In Collie BMX riders dominate skateboarders and pedestrians,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. On days when it rains they sit at bench and encourage negligent driving - otherwise known as burnouts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Obviously freestyle BMX is their passion whilst boredom, getting into fights with footballers and getting busted for drinking in public are their biggest challenges.
I also paid a visit to the office of the local rag. Elysia and Amy from the Collie Mail are the Gossip Gate Keepers. Small towns are renowned for their lighting speed grapevines and Elysia who's born and bred Collie says that if it's happening in Collie, she'll know about it.
DJ Jarrad spends his Saturday nights behind the mic at Collie Community Radio. He takes requests all night long although the night I was in the studio we only got two calls and one was a set up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
When we did get the call I sidled up to mic to do a bit of on-air audience research,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It's only be on air since October but Collie Community Radio is proving a bit of a hit. They have no competition for local content as the nearest radio station is 45 mins away in Bunbury,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
On a quick trip to the coal face I met Belinda,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a young geologist. Apart from talking about the coal industry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she also told me about how she met her husband in a mine in Kalgoorlie.
