Baseball, softball, squash, wrestling may be in 2020 Olympics
LAUSANNE, Switzerland, May 29 () -- Baseball, softball, squash and wrestling have been approved for a consideration vote for inclusion at the 2020 Olympics, officials said Wednesday.Baseball and softball -- considered one entry -- squash and wrestling were nominated by the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee after a vote Wednesday to be placed before the full IOC for a vote on inclusion.Karate, roller sports, sports climbing, wakeboarding and wushu were eliminated from consideration for the 2020 Games.The IOC is to vote on the sports' roster for the 2020 Games at meeting Sept. 7 in Buenos Aires. That same meeting includes votes on choosing a site between Istanbul, Turkey; Madrid; and Tokyo for the 2020 Olympics."The Executive Board received excellent presentations today from eight International Federations," IOC President Jacques Rogge said in a release. "It was never going to be an easy decision but I feel my colleagues on the Board made a good decision in selecting baseball/softball, squash and wrestling to be put forward in Buenos Aires."I wish the three shortlisted sports the best of luck in the run-up to the vote in September and would like to thank the other sports for their hard work and dedication."Wrestling was a surprise preliminary deletion from the Olympics roster effective in the 2020 Games. A part of the ancient Roman games, wrestling had been a sport in every modern Games except in 1900.Baseball and softball were removed as Olympic sports in 2005, effective with the 2012 Olympics in London. Baseball was included in the 1992 Games and softball joined the schedule in 1996.Squash has never been an official Olympics sport.
