Harker,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 34, spent the previous two seasons playing for the Energy as a power forward. Although he's young for a coach, the Raymond native has had his share of experience with the role. He was a player-coach for the Birmingham Bullets in the British Basketball League and served as head coach for the Worcester Wolves during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons in the BBL.
Harker will be trading in his sneakers for dress shoes this season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. His job is solely as the team's coach,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"I've had some time to reflect and think about what brought me back to the Energy and what brought me back to the city," Harker said after being introduced by Energy general manager Rick Stanley.
"After our last game last year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], coach Paul Sir mentioned that we won't remember the wins and we won't remember the losses, but we will remember the relationships. That's kind of why I'm here.
"The relationships formed, obviously they're short seasons in the IBL,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the culture that they've created in Edmonton is a winning culture . and I'm proud to be a part of that."
Considering that the 2010 Energy season ended prematurely,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], thanks to a financially driven ownership decision to not send the team to the playoffs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Harker said he hoped his involvement with the team would convince his former teammates to return to Edmonton this year.
"I'll be honest. We're in discussions with Lee (Scruggs),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Will (Funn) and Rashaun (Broadus),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Harker said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], referencing three important pieces of the team's past successes.
All three players are currently playing overseas.
"I think it does help to have them realize that we're trying to keep this thing together and this core group of guys," Harker said.
While the future of the team has hung in the air for the last nine months,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Harker and Stanley said they have been looking forward to assemble this season's roster in recent weeks. Patrick -signed contracts hursday.
"We're really excited to have Skouson as a coach," said Patrick, who Harker already has picked as a captain for the team. "(He's) a great player, a really great guy and a great man.
"I hope we can bring a championship to the City of Champions."
To that end,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Stanley said he's been working on bringing in three players with NBA experience to spruce up the roster.
"Right now, we are in negotiation with three ex-NBA players. The depth and the talent level that could come to the Energy this year is outstanding,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
The most high-profile of the three players is former all-star and longtime Boston Celtic Antoine Walker, who ran into financial hardship in 2009 after earning $110 million during his 13-year NBA career. Walker,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 34,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], played in the NBA's Development League this season in hopes of latching on with an NBA team.
Also on Stanley's radar is former Vancouver Grizzlies player Michael Dickerson. The 35-year-old hasn't played in the NBA since the 2002-03 season, but has been training hard. He worked out with the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds this year, still intent on making a comeback.
