LONG BEFORE Earl Lloyd became the first black man to play in an NBA game in 1950, there was 5-foot-8 Harry "Bucky" Lew , the first black professional player.
In his new book, "They Cleared the Lane -- The NBA's Black Pioneers," former Chronicle writer Ron Thomas , now with the Examiner, quotes from a newspaper interview that Lew gave in 1958 about his first game for the Pawtucketville Athletic Club of Lowell, Mass. , in the New England Basketball League . It was 1902, and Lew was 18.
The game bore little resemblance to the sport today. For one thing, you didn't shoot "off the glass." Not only was there no glass, there was no backboard at all. "Everything had to go in clean," Lew said. After each missed shot, there was a free-for-all to get the ball.
"There were no out-of-bounds markers. We had a fence around the court with nets hanging from the ceiling," he said.
