The former St. Thomas mayor is, how to put it, delightfully unpolished, utterly without airs and as down-to-earth as a tractor blade slicing an Elgin County furrow.
Off duty, he zips about the Pink Palace that is Queen's Park in Converse sneakers. You'll find him, several times daily, ducking out (berobed) for a smoke beside the building.
That Peters has been fair and firm in the Speaker's chair is universally agreed. But his true gift to the job has been his energy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], enthusiasm and a boundless curiosity that befits an amateur history buff.
Peters has a genuine respect for the province's traditions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and an abiding sense of the privileged position he and other legislators hold.
Perhaps it comes from being one of those not to the manor born that Peters constantly gave the impression of wanting to pinch himself to make sure he wasn't dreaming that he had the job,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
His people were Ukrainian. His surname was anglicized from Pidwerbeski. He spent 17 years as a stock clerk at a St. Thomas A He kept that job even after he was elected to city council in 1988. In 1991, at 28, he was elected mayor and re-elected twice.
He was derided by some as "the bag-boy mayor." But that was before "retail politics" became a virtue.
"It teaches a lot about the public," he said. "You learn to put the customers' needs first. I met a lot of people working there."
Peters was elected to the legislature in 1999, served a term in opposition, then a term in government as both agriculture and labour minister. He was not appointed to cabinet on Premier Dalton McGuinty's re-election in 2007 and instead ran for Speaker.
It was plain he loved the job,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. He'd return from trips to parliamentary conferences abroad agog at who he'd met or what he'd learned. He'd be tickled to pass on a copy of some old history book he'd found that mentioned the Queen's Park Press Gallery.
This made amends for his (unsuccessful) bid to co-opt for the Speaker's apartment a painting by former gallery member Roy Greenaway (of McSorley's Old Ale House in New York) that graces the gallery lounge,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
His decision,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], announced this week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not to seek re-election holds both a warning and an example.
Peters will not be the last Liberal to decide the future holds more promising options than to run again,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. And his is exactly the sort of seat that will be put in peril by a popular incumbent's resignation.
The example he has set is that there is more to life than politics and that probably no one needs make a permanent career of the racket.
At 47, he's had two decades at the local and provincial level and wants to go back to school or to the private sector.
It probably would help PC Leader Tim Hudak's pitch to be the voice of something new if he weren't already 15 years in politics,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
It might turn out to have been a wiser option for McGuinty to have taken his two majority victories and his 20 years as an MPP and called it a career last year.
