With awful ingenuity, it adjusts itself to fit its victim as though made-to-measure. There are as many different styles of depression as there are depressives, and the remedies are equally idiosyncratic.
Throughout history, depressives have recorded what worked for them, in an attempt to help their fellow sufferers. Yet in the introduction to her book on baking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Saved By Cake, she describes suffering from a depression so crippling that looked ugly and pointy and scary,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even babies and flowers and Mulberry bags I wondered if I accidentally managed to die without noticing it and was in hell

Whatever was going on with me, I had to wait it out. Marian decided to make her a cake and something about the process of baking gave her comfort.

And you can tell that Marian must have been feeling a bit better by this stage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because the recipes become increasingly exuberant, in fact positively playful.
Starting from modest beginnings with such tea-time workhorses as Chocolate Chip Cupcakes and Reliable Cupcakes things rapidly become positively surreal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with Carrot Cake Cupcakes decorated with marzipan carrots in made from Coco Pops, Wasabi And White Chocolate Cupcakes With Salted Caramel Icing, and Slightly Sinister Star Anise Cupcakes.
These last have black icing and a liquorice topping.
people, particularly jazz lovers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I found, are mad for these others are a bit freaked out. Especially children. Sometimes they cry, Marian notes.
As cookbooks go, this one is on the insouciant side: a recipe for Pineapple Tarte Tatin begins: pastry is the very divil to make. Black Forest Gateau Trifle contains a warning that will take hours and hours and hours. Longer, if you in a hurry. Nor are depressives, for that matter. But Marian Keyes proves the exception in both cases. This isn a purists cookbook. It like a gossip around the kitchen table with your best friend. It girly, chatty, obsessed with shoes and quite camp.
