There is a motif in the novel of shoes/putting on someone else shoes. In the beggining of the novel Lena puts on her brother shoes(p 6). Lena seems to be a strong and independant person even though the stereotype during that time in the south was that women were weak. By putting on the shoes Joe is stepping into the role of the stereotype of the African American man being chased by white police officers. Joe thought that he had finally been chased into "the black abyss" which he had been trying to avoid "for thirty years" (p 331).
