Fellate Fellate Fellate,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
I have no problem giving Bochy his due, as he really is an insanely different manager in the postseason. Praise a guy for the good he does,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], y'know? But I was talking about more than just the San Diego media. If the Diamondbacks do well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we're going to be hit with some absurd amount of national articles on how the sabermetricians lost, and how every team should build a team on grit character like that hunky Kevin Towers.
There's a realistic possibility the Diamondbacks have a great 2013 (their projections indicate anywhere between 84-88 wins), but it would be primarily because of the rest of the division regressing and the existing squad underperforming in 2012. Or Towers improving the rotation and, possibly, the 'pen - the major moves he made to the rest of the club were considered in many circles to be detrimental. Those would have far more influence than any clubhouse character issues being resolved.
And you hardly have to explain the divisional facts of life to the GM s of the other three teams,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because like Towers and Sabean, the NL West is all they ve ever known in that capacity. Before he ran the Padres,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Josh Byrnes was GM of the Diamondbacks. Before he was GM of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Ned Colletti was Sabean s right-hand man in San Francisco. Dan O Dowd s got his own set of problems in Colorado, but he s been GM of the Rockies since 1999.
Sabes and I have been here a bit longer, but it s a very strong peer group,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and every one of us has only been a GM within the NL West, said Towers. They know how to win the division. They all have won the division or put a team in the World Series. Everybody has a strong feel for what it takes and what everybody else is doing in the division."
Well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when you got your grit and gumption and temerity, that beats out Eckstein heart any day of the week.
Dbacks will win because of solid depth and bullpen. Meaning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], guys like Chavez, Hinske,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Kubel or Parra or whomever the extra OF is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bloomquist,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], give solid play off the bench as either spot players or pinch hitters. So, the drop off from the regulars to the bench, is not much.
Eaton in CF is an unknown
Hill at 2B - can he do it again
Prado - good player
SS - probably on par with ours though Pennington and Gigi have the good glove but no bats
Pitching: should be solid top to bottom
just hope they suck it so they can take the 'grit shup up juice and drink it down'
My point was more than they'll win due to the pieces Towers acquired without trade. You have to believe Eaton, Hill, Montero (greatly) outperform their projections to make up for what he dealt away in the outfield. But they'll probably go with a 12 man staff because god knows KT loves his bullpens.
If so, they have four roster spots to allocate between Bloomquist/Chavez/Hinske/McDonald/[whichever of Parra or Eaton doesn't start in CF]/Campana/Pollock. The first four are as likely as not to post negative WAR,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and are on guaranteed contracts. So they'll need to cut at least two of KT's inexplicable objects of lust just to get a fourth and fifth outfielder on the roster.
If the DBacks are planning to go with an 11 man pitching staff instead of a 12 man staff,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], having Campana as a designated PR/late inning defensive replacement for Kubel and/or Ross is almost defensible. But they'll probably go with a 12 man staff because god knows KT loves his bullpens.
