"The Greek," "Hansen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," "Dale Velzy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," "Jack's"-the faded decals on the old wooden station wagons recall surfing's biggest legends and speak volumes about a car culture and a way of life in beach towns from Los Angeles to San Diego.
The woody gathering known as Wavecrest takes place every third Saturday in September,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which this year makes it Sept. 16. Over the years various beach communities along the coast that have a good surf break have played host to the event. Encinitas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 35 miles north of San Diego, hosts Wavecrest this year.
Graying surfers and old station wagon enthusiasts will gather to swap stories of woodies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], longboards and surfing with legends like Chuck Dent and Corky Carroll, and to reminisce about yet another longtime surf spot threatened by a housing development.
Now in its 27th year, Wavecrest was first held in a dirt parking lot at the old Wavecrest Motel in Del Mar in 1980 with just eight cars. "Officially it was a surfing competition and some old woodies just happened to show up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," explains Reggie Keyohara,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 58, a veteran of all 26 meets and owner of a 1948 Ford. "We used to make it mandatory you had to drink a pail of beer before your heat and run down the cliffs, across the railroad tracks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and sprint over the sand to catch the waves. If you won two or three heats, it was pretty difficult to stand up on the board by the end of the competition."

Last year nearly 270 woodies made the trek to Moonlight Beach for a weekend that included cruising up and down Pacific Coast Highway,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a car show, live surf music and yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even surfing on old nine-foot-six-inch Dewey Webers.
"First and foremost, it's still a surfing event,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Keyohara. "Some of these guys are still complaining about 'Who cut who off' back in 1965."
"Wavecrest is a pilgrimage for anyone who owns a woody,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Charles Furman,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], president of San Diego Woodies and owner of an ultra-rare 1940 Dodge. "It's not a concours by any stretch of the imagination. We see everything from restored cars to hot rodders to the traditional surf wagon that is held together with stickers and decals. We never know what will be the crowd favorite when it comes to judging."
So don't bother looking to spot the blue blazer/ boater set at Wavecrest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nitpicking about the correct bolt. It's bring what you've got. Period surfer dress is most welcome-no shirt,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no shoes, no problem.
