Change coming to Idaho
Vandal fans awoke this morning to find a very cryptic message from the university that has left the internet a buzz. Found in the University of Idaho's student newspaper "The Argonaut" and on the university's fan page on Facebook, fans were urged to join Athletic Director Rob Spear and UI President M. Duane Nellis at the SprinTurf practice fields next to the Kibbie Dome for a "special announcement" on Friday at 3:30 pm in what is seemingly a part of Idaho's Homecoming celebration.
While a press conference isn't always the most mysterious thing in the world,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it is the picture that came with the announcement of the press conference that is causing a lot of the talk. The picture (found here) depicts a flock of birds flying in a V formation with the phrase "change is coming" behind them. Nobody is completely sure what the image is supposed to symbolize, but that hasn't stopped the masses from theorizing on it.
With all the recent improvements to the Kibbie Dome, it makes sense that some would believe this would be the announcement. The aesthetics of the Dome have been greatly improved over the last few years thanks to all of the renovations, but the scoreboards/videoboard continues to look a bit outdated. It would be a nice (and somewhat affordable) next step in making the Dome one of the nicest stadiums in the country, but doesn't seem to fit in this case.
Why would there be so much grandstanding for something as blah and ho hum as more Dome renovations? The answer is that there would't be,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. This kind of thing is one of those "o by the way" deals and not something worthy of a major announcement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Likely-hood of this being announced: 5-10%
In an age where teams are constantly reinventing themselves, Idaho could be the next to jump on this bandwagon. So far this football season, Idaho debuted new road jerseys during their game against Texas A as well as newly done alterations to their home jerseys against Fresno State. Giving the fans a glimpse of new uniforms for all other major sports would be a huge announcement and fit the fun and festive feel that Homecoming truly embraces. The only thing that keeps this idea from being close to reality is the lack or the presumed lack of involvement from the coaching staff for any of these sports and how Idaho has handled uniform changes in the past.
Is it possible that Robb Akey or Don Verlin surprise the crowd by showing up to show off new Vandal gear? Maybe, but not likely. It wouldn't make sense for something like this to happen withouth them as both are the faces (or rather mustaches) of the school's athletics. When that is also added in with the fact that Idaho hasn't held a press conference in regards to uniforms in years, this idea has an outside chance of happening,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but probably won't.
Likely-hood of this being announced: 10-15%
New Basketball/Multi-purpose Arena
Something that fans and alumni have been waiting on for a long time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a new arena for basketball, volleyball, and just general stuff like the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival would be a HUGE change for Idaho. As great as it is to have basketball in the Dome, it doesn't have the same feel as if you were watching one of the major schools like Duke or even Gonzaga live in one of their arenas. It's been ages since Idaho has build a new stadium and one that is smaller than the Dome would be better for hosting events that wouldn't generally fill it. It would also allow the Women's Volleyball team a chance to get out of Memorial Gym and feel like one of the major programs.
The biggest problem with this is that the reason a stadium of this nature hasn't been built is because there hasn't been enough need for it. Attendance at sports other than football has been consistently low for years, so spending more money to build another stadium while at the same time spending money to beef up the Dome doesn't make financial sense. The Jazz Festival would gain the most though as it would be better suited in smaller confines and its supporters could be secretly stacking mountains of cash to help fund a project of this nature. This would be a huge change, but one that doesn't fit the imagery real well.
Likely-hood of this being announced: 20-25%
Teams these days are changing conferences left and right. What bigger news could Spear and Nellis drop on Homecoming than Idaho joining a new conference? Conferences are becoming more and more trigger happy when inviting teams to join them as the threat of one of their current teams possibly leaving grows day after day. This is especially true with Idaho's most likely suitor the Mountain West Conference. Rumors that Air Force could be the next to defect to either the Big East or Big 12 are flooding the sports newswire like fire. The MWC has already raided the WAC for teams before (Boise State, Nevada, Hawaii, and Fresno State) and it would make sense for them to comeback for either Idaho or Utah State. Idaho would hold a slight edge on USU's stellar basketball program as their rivalry with Boise State would bring in more revenue and tradition to the conference since USU's main rival BYU is now independent.
On the other hand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with MWC looking to gain AQ status, both Idaho and Utah State are terrible additions as both are located in somewhat bad media markets and are incredibly inconsistent in football. There are other conferences like Conference USA that they could raid that would benefit them more. Idaho's invite would also get a lot of heat drawn on the MWC officials by Boise State as they don't want anything to do with the Vandals. This idea has a higher possibility than the others so far,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it's still a low one.
Likely-hood of this being announced: 30-35%
Out of all the ideas that have been thrown around and the one most likely to cause Spear and Nellis to get booed off the SprinTurf, Idaho could announce plans to play multiple "neutral site" games in the Boise area across all sports. The alumni base in Boise is massive, with a few of them even holding major offices in the state's government. Idaho athletics competing in Boise without the Broncos involved isn't completely unheard of. In celebration of Idaho participating in the 2009 Humanitarian Bowl, one of the Vandal men's basketball games was moved to Boise and played the night before. This year, it was announced that Idaho will play a couple "neutral site" men's basketball games in the Boise area,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one in the heart of the city against Lewis Clark State and one at the Idaho Center in Nampa against Boise State.
If we want to overanalyze the image in the ad,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this idea makes perfect sense. The birds, probably Canadian Geese, flock south during seasonal migration. Then if we take the V formation that they fly in as a symbol for the Vandal "V" that has become very prevalent in Idaho's marketing for this sports season, it seems to draw us to this conclusion that Idaho will go to Boise for sports. This idea will probably anger a lot of fans and students as it will bring up concerns about travel during winter in a state isn't always the safest to travel as well as one major question,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "If all sports will play at least one game in the Boise area, where will the football game be?".
The most obvious and most unlikable answer is at Bronco Stadium. Nothing is more painful and sickening to a sports fan than having to play at their rival's stadium,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially in this situation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when Boise State ran away from their annual game with the Vandals. On top of that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], BSU's blatant dodging of a game with the Vandals will also mean that any game played in that area won't be against the Broncos. Sadly though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there aren't really any other choices for venues as the Idaho Center isn't really built to house something like that and there aren't any other major stadiums to play in outside of traveling to Idaho State, which makes zero sense.
Everything matches up to say that this one will be the announcement. If football isn't included in this package, fans might be fine with the decision, but if it is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], expect a wave of discontent from fans to come rolling in.
Likely-hood of this being announced: 75-90%
Friday will ultimately be the day we find out what is actually going down. If you live in the Moscow area or plan to go up for Homecoming, it would be wise to check this press conference out. The hype alone should be worth the time and whatever is announced will be fun to bring up at the tailgate later.
