'Book Fairy brings literary magic to local children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
With these whimsical words,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], moves deftly among awe-struck girls and boys, tapping them on the head with a star-topped wand dangling with ribbons with one hand and handing them a book mark promoting reading with the other.
Decked out in a purple gown and glittering Converse sneakers, she spends Saturdays and occasional weekday afternoons turning the written word into a magical storytelling as the self-styled "book fairy."
It all started when 12 years ago when Brown was volunteering at in her daughter's class reading to children. When she found out she couldn't wear a costume during a Halloween reading, the Book Fairy was created.
"I created a persona that would let me dress up because I love dressing up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Brown said.
"I moved from reading to just my daughter's class to the entire grade. Now I visit libraries, birthday parties, schools - whoever will have me."
Brown reads different books based on the event or holiday, and is often invited to literary promotional events. Some of her favorite books to read aloud include "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], No Good,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Very Bad Day" and "I Love You, Stinky Face."
In addition to reading at elementary schools all over the city, Brown makes monthly appearances at the San Antonio Children's Museum.
"We love having her here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said , school and groups coordinator for the San Antonio Children's Museum. "She's a real joy to have. She engages with the children and gets them excited about reading. She's a magnet for children."
In a world of iPods,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], iPhones and iPads,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], making a picture book exciting is no small feat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Compton says.
"One of our major focuses at the children's museum for education is early literacy," said Compton. "This is one way to get the entire family involved. Children love the story, adults love the jokes and the whole family is reading."
Using different voices and waving her wand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Brown enchants parents as well as kids.
"It was a great way to get kids to read,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," parent said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whose daughters Katherine and Hannah participated in Brown's story time. "She's very interactive. She held their attention the whole time."
And while Brown admits girls automatically love the Book Fairy, she manages to win boys over with her monster truck bookmarks for "superfast monster truck brains."
"School can be so hard for kids and reading becomes work," Brown said. "They forget to have fun and turn to video games. Studies show that our brains zone out during television and video games. Books open up a whole new world to explore. With e-readers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we can combine electronics and reading."
Brown says part of her goal is to make reading less intimidating for those not naturally drawn to it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"I always tell kids it doesn't matter what you read as long as you read what you like,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Brown said. "You can always find something magical to read. If you don't like one thing, we can find another."
However, Brown says the secret to her magic comes from her audience.
"I get all sorts of questions, like 'Are you real' and 'Can you fly'?" Brown laughed. "But my favorite moment was a little 5-year-old boy who looked at me and said, 'You look like you walked out of a fairy tale.' It cracked me up."
