Predictions for week five of the NFL
Before we get to this week's NFL picks, we welcome the arrival of another regular season in the National Hockey League.
The Boston Bruins received their championship rings, which feature six diamonds, symbolic of the six Stanley Cups won in franchise history,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], surrounded by sixty other diamonds on the whopping 505 rings to be distributed by the team to players, coaches,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], support staff and front office personnel.
So, which team will have a fitting for ring sizes next summer? I believe the answer lies among a pair of teams that have underachieved in recent years and have lost some of their lustre, but the Washington Capitals and San Jose Sharks remain two extremely talented teams. When you least expect it, right?
Another team I will follow closely is my dark horse choice. The Anaheim Ducks are located in the shadows of Disneyland, where the best line in the NHL of Bobby Ryan, Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry plays with Jonas Hiller an All-Star goaltender with the talent to carry his club to a championship.
In the meantime, let's focus on the football season. As always, a big tip of the cap to the ESPN research department for providing many of the notes, stats and trends found in the Week 5 predictions.
Michael Vick said this week that "the dream team thing is over" for his Eagles,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Despite his wishes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we haven't heard the last of this nickname for his one-win team, which has been one of the biggest surprises of this NFL season. They currently reside in the NFC East basement after the first quarter of the regular season. They can point to collapses in the fourth quarter in each of the last three games - outscored 36-0 in the final frame of these three losses.
Now they face another big surprise of this season and a team that has earned its record with dramatic comebacks and fantastic finishes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but is coming off its first loss of the season. This, according to Buffalo wide receiver Stevie Johnson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], allows the Eagles to enter this game with the wrong mindset.
Says Johnson, "They're going to come in thinking, 'Oh yeah, same old Bills, we're a better team than they are, the names on their team is better than on our team.'"
I agree with Stevie,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. They're not.
BUCCANEERS (3-1) at 49ers (3-1):
Josh Freeman and the Buccaneers have won three straight games,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], following their home win over the winless Colts on Monday Night Football.
Now they travel to San Francisco where they face a 49ers team that is 3-1 under first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh. The Niners beat the Eagles last week by overcoming a 20-point deficit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], behind an offense that ranked last in the National Football League through the first three games of the season. But, that offense will be fresh and rested. A cross-country flight following the buzz and excitement of a Monday Night home game is a recipe for a Bucs loss.
Tom Brady fell off his record pace after throwing for a season-low 226 yards in Week 4. He still threw for a pair of touchdown passes for a 13th straight regular-season game to match Peyton Manning for the longest streak in NFL history,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
This is not a good or promising sign for the Jets defense, which has allowed 34 points in back-to-back losses.
If the Patriots score at least 30 points in their next two games,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they will tie the NFL record for most consecutive 30-point games.
The Patriots may struggle with that record but they'll get the win.
PACKERS (4-0) at FALCONS (2-2)
The Packers are the first defending Super Bowl champion to start 4-0 since the 2008 Giants, who also were 4-0. Aaron Rodgers and his teammates have won ten straight games, including the playoffs. In that span,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Rodgers has completed 70.1 percent of his passes. He has averaged 305.2 passing yards per game (26 passing TDs, 5 interceptions).
Rodgers will side-step the Falcons defense with the same grace and abilities with which he's been able to stay on his feet despite new criticism pointed in his direction by former Packers quarterback Brett Favre.
The Falcons tend to play better at home than on the road, but it won't matter this week. The Packers are just too deep and too tough.
Can they do it again, if the situation arises?
The Lions come in after two incredible road comebacks. In Week 3, they overcame a 20-point deficit at Minnesota to win in overtime. In Week 4, they overcame a 24-point deficit at Dallas. As a result, the Lions join the Packers (both 4-0) as the only unbeaten teams remaining in the NFL. It's a nice turnaround from last season when they opened 0-4.
Their reward is a Monday Night Football matchup against the Bears - winners of four straight Monday Night games. They are 6-1 on MNF under head coach Lovie Smith.
Calvin Johnson is working on a streak of his own. The Lions receiver is the first player in NFL history with two or more receiving touchdown receptions in each of first four games of the season. He can become the first player all-time with two or more receiving TDs in 5 games in row.
These Bears have no answer for the receiver nicknamed "Megatron". Few teams do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
