Carlisle nightclub bouncer used job to scam over
Daniel Smithson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 30, claimed to be a wealthy businessman,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with seven houses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a luxury car,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], expensive clothes, a mass of gold jewellery and a habit of spending thousands of pounds a night on the roulette wheel.
But in fact he was only the gambling addicted head doorman at Terminal 1, the popular nightspot in Botchergate.
And he was using his job which he claimed to do only the love of it to find contacts who would be taken in by his offer of a quick profit on their money,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
At Carlisle Crown Court Smithson luck ran out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when he was jailed for three years and four months after admitting defrauding nine men who had been duped by his claims.
Prosecuting counsel Tim Evans told the court: talked a good game and many were convinced by what they thought was a very successful businessman. of his victims told the police: came across as a genuine,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nice person who was very easy to get on with. court heard Smithson approached his workmates,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or people he met through them, inviting them to invest thousands of pounds with him to release a cargo of quadbikes which,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he claimed, had been shipped in to Grimsby docks.
Smithson, who has no fixed address but has recently been living with his brother in Hull,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], his partner in Pontefract or his son in Doncaster,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], claimed they would get a return of at least for a stake but led them to believe they would make even more.
Once they had given him an initial payment he invented excuses why he needed more money usually that the whole deal was being put in by problems at the docks.
Those conned by him were:
Gavin Pew, who invested with him, and then went on to give him additional payments of and Mr Pew brother John,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who handed over a total of Lorry driver David Cowing, who borrowed from his boss and even interrupted his wedding day to make a further payment, bringing his total to The court heard Mr Cowing lost everything, and his three-year relationship with his girlfriend foundered when he could not even afford to buy shoes for their child.
Thomas Armstrong, a self-employed plumber and fellow Terminal 1 doorman, who handed over including the inheritance from his father which he needed to buy a house;
Adrian Bell who paid Smithson at least John Parry who borrowed from his girlfriend to reach the asked for;
Michael Shakeshaft, a theatrical agent who supplied acts to the nightclub, who lost Trevor Taylor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], another Terminal 1 employee, whom Smithson targeted for after he won in a football bet;
And Terminal 1 deputy manager Suffyan Dougman,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who parted with mitigation, Brendan Burke blamed it all on Smithson gambling addiction.
is a measure of the grip in which it held him that he continued in the belief that his gambling would enable him to return people money to them with a profit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he said.
Judge Paul Batty QC said that though Smithson the aura of being an extremely successful businessman, dripping with gold jewellery he was nothing more than a in the extreme criminal.
