Let me explain. The story is placed in Hollywood within the 1980s and features a couple of Mamet trademark male sharks. The first is Bobby Gould,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that has just been made head of production at an unnamed Hollywood studio,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], by never overestimating the public tastes.
His equally amoral,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], colleague is Charlie Fox,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who is bursting with news. A significant Hollywood star has read an awful prison-drama script that Charlie continues to be touting and is eager to do the movie. It will make their careers and everybody will end up extremely rich.
Bobby,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], meanwhile,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has promised the boss to give a read for an artsy book about radiation and also the end of the world but everybody knows they won turn that certain right into a film. Everyone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], except Karen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a temporary secretary. Bobby delegates her to read it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], simply so he is able to seduce her later and win a $500 bet with Charlie. She loves the book.
Within the pivotal second scene,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Karen who's not as na and unambitious as she seems convinces Bobby to show pure,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to put aside his fear making the radiation movie.
Bobby may be sold on the concept but the audience isn Madonna,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who literally role on Broadway in 1988,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], didn even compare. Sarah Wilson is really a distinctly better actor (and that perhaps a lesser compliment of computer meant to be) but neither she nor director David Storch can find a way to persuade us this particular leopard would change its spots. And that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], inevitably,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], invalidates the rest of the play.
But there still pleasure to be had. Both vicious Hollywood execs are used panache by Ari Cohen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who makes a grounded,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], very-much-in-charge Bobby,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Jordan Pettle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whose toadying,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ambitious Charlie literally dances readily at the prospect of fame and fortune.
Soulpepper knows its Mamet villains and Cohen and Pettle really are a joy to watch,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even if their respective characters are loathsome in the extreme. Additionally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it fun watching Wilson Karen slowly reveal her true colours.
