Obama ready to step in as Queensland flood crisis deepens
New Zealand also sent aid as the state struggles to cope with the worst floods in history as a wall of water heads towards several northern NSW towns.
Rockhampton's 75,000 residents were preparing for the peak of the Fitzroy River at 9.4m today, which will swamp 400 homes.
"On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I offer my condolences for the loss of life and damage in Queensland caused by the recent flooding," Mrs Clinton said.
"Australia is an important partner and close friend of the United States and we stand ready to provide assistance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
A military operation has been launched to get food to tens of thousands of people who could be cut off for weeks in 22 towns and cities across Queensland.
Two navy Sea King helicopters were dropping supplies to Roma while barges were being used to get food into Rockhampton, and stores in the town of Jericho to the west were out of supplies yesterday.
Animal rescue groups were struggling to reach pets owners left behind in their flooded homes because snakes and crocodiles were roaming murky floodwaters.
In NSW,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the town of Goodooga, population 400, is expected to be surrounded by floodwaters as early as the weekend. Residents in nearby Weilmoringle and Angledool are also facing the possibility of isolation.
"In the March flood,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], grass held back the floodwater but I don't think we will be as lucky,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Brewarrina Mayor Matthew SlackSmith said.
In Bourke, the river level is already at 12.2m. The peak during the May 2010 floods was 10.7m.
The next flood emergency is expected in St George in southwest Queensland, where residents are still recovering from a record 13.3m flood in March, with the Balonne River set to top 14m early next week.

Where are those who bitterly complained that we don't get enough help from other counties? We should stop helping poorer countries because we don't get any help here? Those complaining that (Labor) Governments are not doing anything? The military is not helping out? Where are you guys,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? You seem to be quiet lately. These types of disasters have NOTHING to do with politics and is all about helping the people stricken in Queensland. Doesn't matter what 'colour' the political party is they all help out those in real need.
