Practise thrift for fun
My call for thrifty personal finance ideas generated an avalanche of reaction, from how to pay off your mortgage quickly to how a cup of coffee can make you rich. Here's the first batch of responses - I'll reprint some more fantastic ideas in next week's column.
Sandy Scholey and her husband bought a house 33 years ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when the mortgage interest rate was 11 per cent: "Every night we emptied all the change from our pockets. I'd roll up the change and take it down to deposit in an account I'd opened just for this purpose. If I got a mail-in rebate or income tax back, I'd deposit that. Once a year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I made an extra payment on my mortgage. We paid the mortgage off in 12 years."
Bev Kennedy wins for sheer volume of entries. you tick off the coupons you want and they mail them to you free in just a couple of days. And for the last several baby showers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I attended I also included an envelope with diaper and baby-related coupons for the new mom."
Emma Dumas is another volume winner: "Clean the old-fashioned,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], environmental way. White vinegar,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], lemon juice,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], baking soda, borax,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], soap and salt as an abrasive can clean almost anything. It is healthier for you and your family. Old T-shirts and tea towels are great for cleaning. For minor cuts and burns,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], use aloe vera. I always have a plant in the kitchen."
Jenine Condotta offers a cheap and easy way to stretch meals: "I purchase chicken breasts on sale. First I slice them into thin fillets for breading to make delicious chicken cutlets. Second,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I use the small pieces (not suitable for a cutlet) left over for a stir-fry. Finally, I use the bones to make chicken broth to which I add vegetables and noodles or rice. For $1.99 a pound on sale, three delicious meals!"
Honey Novick is a singer in Guelph and being thrifty is a necessity:
"A Bounce tissue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], once it is used in the dryer, can be used to dust or wipe the counters and I also use it to shine my boots. Plastic bags - not shopping bags but the ones that come with carrots or celery in them - are used to keep scraps or garbage. I live in a world of abundance. It's all around."
And finally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from Jasper Martin: "You must have a budget and write everything down and balance at the end of each month. You have to see where the money is being spent. I have a large notebook that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to date, contains eight years of cash flow. The total I have socked away is $245,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 based on a salary of less than $70,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000. Walk away from an unnecessary purchase and think about it over a coffee. Chances are you will decide you don't need it and, for the price of that coffee,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you have saved money. Use a drying rack. Not only do you save dollars but you put humidity back into the air. And I haven't met a pair of underwear yet that really needs a dryer sheet."
