"We weren't aware of how many fit issues there are," says Kendall, who organized fit workshops with local women included in her research. "We found about 60 per cent of women find it difficult to find boots that suit."
It had been Justine who first created the concept for that business, after seeing a custom boot-maker in Bali. The idea is simple: customers take eight different measurements of their feet and legs as directed online. Initially,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the company is providing three leather colours - cognac, khaki and black -and three styles - a set riding boot, a set overthe-knee boot along with a flat military-inspired boot. Soon they'll expand to offer variations and heights of heels, from wedges to stilettos.
All are lined using the company's signature,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], turquoise coloured goat's leather, like Louboutin's famous red shoe soles.
They've found a designer in Vancouver to generate the boot designs and a small factory in Leon, Mexico to craft a pair of boots.
They have two target markets: first, women with fit issues, particularly plus-sized women, says Kendall. "They just haven't any options. For many of those women, we're building them their first set of boots ever. That's so exciting - they've never owned boots before."
The second market is the fashion idealist, "that ladies who designs an ideal boot in her own head after which when she goes shopping, she aren't able to find it."
Prices are still being finalized,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but count on paying about $450 for a pair of the custom boots.
"All from the materials that we're using within the boot construction are of the greatest quality," say Kendall. With the ecommerce business design, "we're eliminating all the traditional channels for markup in retail," she adds. startup, is offering the service for women's fashion boots.
The Barbers happen to be focusing on the idea since March. Justine quit her job using the Town of Edmonton in June to work about the project full-time.
They've already had some sample boots made for themselves and also have spent the better part of the past 3 months fine-tuning their measuring instructions to make sure women get the exact fit they require,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. They've already had test-market groups of women locally take their own measurements and therefore are now having boots made-to-measure for them.
Initially,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they expect a lot of their customers can come from Edmonton but assume that, as word spreads,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so will their client base.
"I think we couldn't be in a much better city to produce a company around boots. People in Edmonton know boots. - We now have an eight-to nine-month boot cycle," says Kendall.
The business name, Poppy Barley,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], refers back to the poppy seeds and barley corns originally used as the measurement for shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "kind of like hands for horses," she says. "That's really what we're going back to - that hand crafted, justfor-you idea."
