John Auringer never discovered who spiked his drink in a Kelowna college dorm room more than Two decades ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but he's been living using the life-changing ramifications ever since.
A hefty dose of what he thinks was moonshine - perhaps ethyl alcohol - slipped into his drink during a party,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and he was on the floor, in cardiac arrest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], legally dead for 4 to 5 minutes.
"After I left my coma,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I had to relearn everything. I had been totally blind - alcohol blindness - for almost two months. I'd to learn everything,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from tying my shoes to brushing my hair,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], once again."
He involved 25 years old at the time, taking cooking classes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with about one-day being a lawyer. The Esquimalt resident,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], now 44, lives with seizures and long-term harm to his fine motor skills,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], on the disability income that he says barely pays the rent.
It's frustrating,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he admits,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but he tries to not be angry. Housing grant to reduce his rent payments and friends at the Seagate apartment when they have lived for 16 years.
The days Colonist Christmas Fund helps him buy food and basic supplies, which he said supplements his use of food banks during the holiday season. "That really helps me."
He doesn't dwell on what went down.
"I'm no angry person,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that i don't concentrate on that anymore,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Auringer. "That's so long ago. I've had more and more people pass away in my life within the last 5 years, my mother and grandfather and cousin, and what's happened in my experience [20 years ago] is nearly obsolete."
Living on a monthly disability payment of $898 per month, though, "really sucks," he added.
