Why do the Dutch wear wooden shoes
They did at one time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. There are three museums in the Netherlands devoted to wooden shoes ("Klompen"). Here is an excerpt of the introduction of one:
"International Wooden Shoe Museum
Wooden shoes: Everyone in Holland knows what wooden shoes are and what they look like. Nowadays wooden shoes are worn less than in the past,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. In those days almost every Dutchman had a pair of wooden shoes and walked on them every day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
So there were many wooden shoe-makers, who all made their own models with their own variety of colours and decorations. This large diversity in wooden shoes from the past and also those from today, is a valuable part of the cultural heritage of the Dutch. Museum "Gebr. Wietzes" in Eelde,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which was founded in 1990, presents a wonderful survey of this heritage.
The Museum is named after the last two wooden shoe makers of Eelde,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the brothers Eiso (1916 1977) and Egbert Wietzes (1925 1988). They were both excellent wooden shoe makers. The ones they made were not only for daily use,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but also for very special occasions.
Egbert Wietzes also started to collect special wooden shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. His collection and also the one of Mr,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Bongers has been brought together in this Museum and show how wooden shoes are used all over the world.
Museum "Gebr. They where strong and gave protection against our wet weather. Imagine walking over clay or mud with other shoes then wooden,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the wooden shoes where just very effective.
Besides the protection against the weather,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they also protected the farmer against feet of cows,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tools like hayforks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], things like that.
In the beginning of the 20st century there where still many people in the country side wearing them. This slowly got less, but they had a small (and colorful) revival in the 60 and early 70 I used to walk on them myself when I was just a child. Not the complete wooden one,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but with a leather strap on top. They walked quite fine actually. Takes some time to get used to,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you have to curl your toes when walking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a bit like flip-flops.
Allthough almost nobody is wearing them sinse then, there are some exceptions. Some farmers still wear them, and I know a few people living in the country side who love to wear them, for the same reason as why they where worn 700 years ago.
