South Australian domestic violence laws tightened
AttorneyGeneral Michael Atkinson said police could now act swiftly to protect victims of domestic violence.
"Women and children should not have to be assaulted a second or third time before intervention orders are issued," he said.
Legislation to introduce the changes was introduced into Parliament today. Mr Atkinson said helping victims of domestic violence to stay in their own homes rather than fleeing was a key objective.
In addition to greater police powers that would help all victims, he said, it would become easier for victims of abuse who lived in rented accommodation to choose to stay.
"The Bill will also allow intervention to protect children from witnessing or being exposed to abuse in their homes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
"This is especially important if we want to break the cycle of abuse that can so tragically occur in some families."
Mr Atkinson said there would also be an emphasis on behavioural change. He said individuals who abused others could be made to attend programs where they would learn to deal with underlying issues such as drug and alcohol abuse, problem gambling and anger management.
At the same time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Status of Women Minister Gail Gago launched an $860,000 fouryear public awareness campaign on domestic violence.
This will feature a series of radio and television commercials which she described as "confronting".
Opposition legal spokeswoman Vickie Chapman said while the Liberals welcomed moves to combat domestic violence, it was disappointing the Government had taken so long to act because the changes were based on a report which was four years old.
"The two things which need to be addressed is what support the Government will give women brave enough to walk away from a home in a domestic violence situation to seek a new life and the second is to have a death register for women who lose their lives, frequently murdered, in domestic violence," she said.

Another excellent round of legislative changes by the party for women. Soon we will arrive at a point where it will be an offence if all men don immediately throw themselves at the feet of woman and beg fogiveness! Police will be given the power to evict an innocent man purely based on their judgement. This is a disgrace and the penultimate bias against men. Most police are flat out counting past 10, how can they possibly be called upon to exersise the wisdom of Solomon with 100 accuracy? Therein lay the dilemma, nobody cares,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], its not designed to be accurate, as long as women get it all their way there votes for all! Enjoy Mr Rann,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you are a true champion of the people!

I agree with Sam Tilde (0915) Any climate which sees legislation favour one sex over another is bound to be abused in some capacity. Should a false claim be lodged you could end up being removed from your own home, you could still be obligated to pay full or half of your mortgage (depending on your partners work conditions), if the place was sold you may only be eligible for 50 of the money earned from the sale on top of your child support obligations (about 30 of your earnings, ongoing). If youre now ex partner shacks up with another partner that person may be earning over $150,000 per year and that will have zero impact on your financial obligations. Sounds fair doesnt it?.

It seems there is no end to this governments desire to erase all mention of human rights from the law books. Right to natural justice (immediate restraining orders) Violated. Mike law and order agenda might win votes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but in the long term we will all have to pay dearly. And by the way Mike, can you please stop sending the message to my children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that the best way to deal with conflict, is through violent retribution AKA "tough on crime".
