Post Running barefoot through Boston
Running barefoot through Boston
As a child, running around the backyard without shoes on seemed almost a given. The blades of grass and patches of dirt almost acted as doses of caffeine, allowing neighborhood kids to scamper in circles without tire until day's end. Maybe it would be best to listen to the little ones when it comes to the controversial concept of barefoot running and go sans shoes for the benefit of the body
It may be tough to remember,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but man was not born with a pair of $150 Nike's strapped to his soles and injury prevention was not the hot topic of conversation. The idea of barefoot running sprinted onto the scene most noticeably after Ethiopia's Abebe Bikila opted against sneakers and won the first of his consecutive Olympic marathon gold medals in a world record 2:15:17 in 1960. Could the body really avoid common injury and even improve fitness without the comforting support of sneakers? Theories circle the running world like laps on a track, but different degrees of running barefoot may just suit your running style.
Cushioning, motion control and orthotics all seem like great sneaker selling points, but these extras may merely deceive the natural rhythm of our running. Once our feet are padded and protected with the added weight of shoes, we inevitably lose our innate input and send mixed messages between our heads and our hearts. In other words,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], shoes may convolute our body's true running form and natural reaction time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ultimately provoking body compensation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], overuse, over training and injury. Remember that sneakers are not evil especially when running through Boston's hectic city streets or neverending winters but also consider that man and running existed long before there were ever any Asics to lace.
Don't feel obligated to run daily without shoes, but definitely don't be scared to go bare around Boston. If the hustle and bustle of city life starts stressing you out, stop stifling those nerves in your feet and experience the endorphin kick of barefoot running,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just like when you were a kid! Here are some great ways to experience Boston barefoot:
Fields of dreams: Boston University,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Harvard and MIT all boast grassy public playing fields that are perfect for some postrun shoe removal. Plan your run to end 10 minutes early at one of the local fields and finish with your feet on the ground.
Play in the park: Drive out to Franklin Park in Dorchester or Lars Anderson Park in Brookline to take advantage of the larger grassy spaces. Do some sprints barefoot on the grass after your run to keep your legs loose and add some pop to your stride.
'Free'dom: Check out Boston's multiple locations of Marathon Sports and City Sports to pickup a pair of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]s a sneaker designed to mimic barefoot running. The shoe is lightweight and flexible, enabling your foot muscles to naturally stretch and strengthen.
