Post Greyhound racing has its own Melbourne Cup
Greyhound racing has its own Melbourne Cup,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
ELEANOR HALL: For most race-going punters the first Tuesday in November is the big day. For a select number though it's the last Thursday of the month that's the highlight of the racing year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Last night, the richest free entry dog race in the world was run, the greyhound Melbourne Cup. Amongst those hoping for a place in greyhound history and a slice of the $200,000 prize pool was Aussie Rules football star Tony Lockett.
NATASHA SIMPSON: It might not have all the glamour of its equine equivalent but for those who favour dogs over horses the greyhound Melbourne Cup has all the excitement of Flemington.
VOX POP 1: Oh it's pretty big, I mean what's bigger than the Melbourne cup,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], really?
VOX POP 2: Yeah, I didn't expect it to be so big, it's almost like the Melbourne Cup or the Caulfield cup.
RACE CALL: They're set to go,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the green light on for the Melbourne cup.
NATASHA SIMPSON: There aren't quite as many roses or hats as the spring carnival,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there's no fashion on the field ?in fact it's more jeans and sneakers than frocks and high heels.
But that doesn't seem to bother the few thousand people watching the country's richest greyhound race.
(To punters) How does it compare to the Melbourne cup of the horse variety?
VOX POP 3: I prefer it because?I don't know, it just seems more, what's the word?intimate. I like it, yeah.
TASH VO: One thing the two cups have in common is the hopeful punter.
VOX POP 4: My plan is number 7, I had a dream and a premonition and I think it may come in.
NATASHA SIMPSON: But the track talk was all about the much fancied Hallucinate, almost as famous for being owned by champion AFL goalkicker Tony Lockett as for its string of wins.
Hallucinate's trainer Darren McDonald says Lockett's superstitions kept him away from Sandown for the big race,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it seems some of Plugger's football technique has rubbed off on the canine sprinter.
DARREN MCDONALD: Tony was a pretty straight ahead footballer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he didn't shirk the issue and this dog's a little bit the same,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if they're in there and there's a run for him to be taken,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if he's got to use his hip and shoulder he tends to do it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so I suppose you could compare them a little bit
NATASHA SIMPSON: But with greyhounds they say, it's all about luck, and Jason Thompson, trainer of the favourite,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Whiskey Assassin, was hoping for some.
JASON THOMPSON: It's such a hard race to make a final of let alone win it, so it's, you know,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's just the race you want to have the trophy on your mantelpiece to say you've won a Melbourne Cup.
NATASHA SIMPSON: But it wasn't to be ?Whiskey Assassin was gone from the start
RACE CALLER: ?and Whiskey Assassin in trouble,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?BR>
NATASHA SIMPSON: Perhaps taking some inspiration from its brothers Crash and Carnage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it wasn't long before Hallucinate bumped its way to the lead. And there it stayed until the finish line, sending the trophy home to vie for shelf space with Tony Lockett's Brownlow medal.
RACE CALLER: Into the straight though, Hallucinate clear. it's hallucinate for the Melbourne Cup.
NATASHA SIMPSON: But then again maybe Darren McDonald has first dibs on the Cup.
DARREN MCDONALD: This is the number one race and it's something that as a young person that I always aspired to win was a Melbourne Cup,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so you know, to have won one now ?it's a great feeling.
