School librarians have been in short supply across the state of Texas and certification option is restricted to nine universities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Dallas ISD created an alternate certification program for librarians within their school district to be able to fill some of these positions.
A college librarian task force worked behind the curtain a full year before the program actually began,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The program they developed consisted of several components,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Participants took 9 hours of university coursework in the summer before beginning like a school librarian,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Employment shadowing component allowed participants to select from an approved job shadow pool at each level for five days in the past year. Mentoring seemed to be area of the program,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Experienced librarians were invited to accomplish a mentor application and were selected by the alternative certification staff,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The mentors received training along with a $1000 stipend. The district moodle system was used to post information for that mentors to use whenever using the AC new librarians,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. AC librarians also took part in traditional district new librarian training along with fully certified librarians who have been a new comer to the library/district,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The AC Coordinator met once a month with the AC librarians to discuss questions and concerns,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], made site visits,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], gave TExES preparation training,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and offered cataloging and children literature courses.
AC participants also needed to complete portfolios to show growth for that year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The program allowed participants being certified school librarians in two years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Participants were actively recruited through newspaper ads, information sessions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], district internet sites along with other communication publications.
The program was funded through the A-Plus grant (Alternative Programs for Librarians in Urban Settings) and was awarded almost $1 million,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The program added 45 librarians to the district over three years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Approximate program expense involved $6000 (if a participant was not within the grant),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Candidates who qualified for the program were interviewed with a ranking instrument. They also had to take a computer test comprising basic Word skills,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], web searching skills,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and basic lesson planning ability.
