Putting up with anything,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Pakistanis' silence over all that is wrong with this country is tacit approval of that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. At least some of you must have heard it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Once upon a time there lived a king who ruled his people with benevolence. One day he gathered his ministers and said: "I want to find out how resilient my people are." His finance minister bowed deeply and said: "Your Highness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I suggest doubling of the tax rate. In these days of high inflation and unemployment, it will surely test your people's resilience." And so the order was passed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the taxes were doubled. But nothing happened. People paid the taxes and went on with their lives as if nothing had happened.
The king summoned the ministers again. This time, the minister for labour spoke. "Your Highness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], yours are a truly resilient people. The tax increase does not seem to have affected them. But if you take away their jobs, it will surely break them and you will know the extent of their resilience." And so a decree was passed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and fifty percent of all jobs were taken away. Again, nothing happened.
All the ministers gave similar ideas to the king,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and all of the ideas were implemented. But no matter how difficult people's lives were made, there was no criticism from the populace.
Then the minister for transport came up with an idea. "Your Highness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we have tried everything, but nothing has worked. If you want to break your people's back,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you must attack the one thing they all must hold dear: their self-respect. I have a foolproof plan to have them come begging to you within days." The king asked the minister for details. The minister said: "Your Highness, our city is divided into two parts: a residential area and a commercial/industrial area where those who still have jobs come to work,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and others to shop. There is a bridge linking these two parts. I suggest that each morning we have two guards standing at the entry point of the commercial area, and as each citizen passes he should be smacked on the head with a shoe. This will hurt them more than any tax, and you will finally know the limit of your people's resilience."
The next morning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], people reached the bridge and found guards manning the entry point, shoes in hand. And as had been decreed, each was smacked twice on the head as he passed. Nobody was spared, not even women,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], children and old people.
A week passed. And one morning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the king woke up to find a group of his subjects at the gate of his palace. Their backs have finally been broken, the king thought,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and now they have surely come begging for mercy. The leader of the citizens was called into the palace so he could speak to the king.
"Your Highness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," the man said. "First you doubled the taxes, and then took away our jobs. At the same time, you cut deals with terrorists who stole our children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and bombed our homes markets and schools. You even cut electricity. And now you are having all of us smacked on the head every day with shoes. We have put up with everything,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and will continue to do so. But the process of shoe smacking takes so long that we miss our connecting buses. Could your kindly increase the number of guards on the bridge so that we could be smacked on the head more quickly?"
This is what is happening in Pakistan. We put up with everything. As long we still have some food to eat and a roof over our heads, we will continue to be silent. And our silence is tacit approval of what is being done to us. Instead of trying to change things,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all we say is that "this is God's will." Until such is our mindset,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we will continue to suffer. It is time to change this way of thinking.
