Ceremonial hall to open for Jill Meagher in her hometown of Drogheda in Ireland
While the outpouring of support in Melbourne for the 29yearold was anticipated, in her hometown of Drogheda,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 40kms north of Dublin, the level of grief has taken community officials by surprise.
Drogheda Town Mayor Paul Bell said the alleged brutality of her slaining and subsequent headline reports over the weekend in the Irish press about the case had shocked locals many of whom had a connection to Australia and knew it only as a land of opportunity for the recessionwracked sons of Ireland,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Mr Bell said he had down two terms as mayor and had seen nothing like the grief being shown for Ms Meagher, despite the fact she lived many years in Australia.
"Everybody knows somebody here so there is a connection and there is a huge sense of disbelief,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
Painstaking path to bush grave
Today Mr Bell said he would open the historic 18th century limestone Tholsel building in the centre of town, an edifice usually reserved for official ceremonial council functions, to let the townsfolk in to express their grief in a condolence book and memorial.
Mr Bell said the use of the building signified the magnitude of the grief affecting his town,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Ms Meagher's uncle Michael McKeon signed a condolence book placed in the towns Laurence shopping mall, his name just another line among the 4000 others in the condolence books placed on a hastily erected memorial stand.
The stand is to displayed for a few weeks and the signatores expected to grow.
The many churches in the township yesterday dedicated their masses and prayers to Ms Meagher and her family as a full memorial was expected to be held in the township in coming weeks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
One of Ms Meagher's best friends Julie Cullen said everyone had been affected by the death.
"Its a horrific outcome," she told News Ltd. "I'm absolutely devastated. At least Jill's family,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and (husband) Tom, will be able to give her a proper burial now that they have a body."
Tens of thousands of people have supported the family through social media including Irish boy band Westlife and actor Chris ODowd.
Ms Meagher's cousin Ritchie Burke said the family was appreciative of the "unbelievable huge support" she had received by people, many of whom didnt even know her.
No decision has yet been made by the family for a burial either in Australia or Ireland.
Hundreds of thousands of people have logged into social media to support Ms Meagher while on Twitter her name has been mentioned more than 12 million times.
