On any given spring afternoon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], these schools bear a striking resemblance to one another: Teens in khakis and flip-flops stroll across lush, litter-free lawns--thick textbooks and lacrosse sticks in hand.
Look past appearances and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to be sure, these schools do have much in common: broad, challenging curricula with small classes and hand-picked teachers, who also live in dorms and coach; nearly every imaginable after-school activity; and bright, interested students from a range of backgrounds. Further, none is immune to typical adolescent problems, from cliques and drugs to suicide.
THE MOMENT YOU SET FOOT ONTO this sprawling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], white-columned campus, it's clear that Phillips Academy (better known as Andover) is not your typical high school, private or public. First, there are the facilities: world-renowned art and archaeology museums,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a 75-acre bird sanctuary,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a research-grade observatory, and much more. Then,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the rich curriculum: more than 300 classes covering everything from state-of-the-art genetic engineering research to seven modern languages,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], plus Latin and Greek.
"Why wait for college when you can do it in high school?" exclaims Carly Rockstroh, a pert,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ponytailed senior in jeans and sneakers. In her three years at Andover, she has taken Religions of the Book: Judaism,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Christianity, and Islam,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], studied resistance movements in literature and film, and researched international capital markets in economics. She has also traveled to South Carolina to build homes for the poor and performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland with her modern dance class.
Andover is all about such opportunity. The school, located in Andover, Mass., is an academically rigorous but socially casual place: Teens are free to dress as they please, to eat when they're hungry, and to surf the Net or chat on the phone until all hours of the night. The progressive atmosphere results in a more eclectic student body, even the occasional eyebrow piercing, torn jeans, or punk-rock hairstyle--veritable offenses on some other campuses. In general, students seem outspoken and overwhelmingly liberal: To wit, despite the fact that George W. Bush is an alumnus, 58 percent of the student body voted for Al Gore and 18 percent for Ralph Nader in a mock presidential election.
Still, teens must also be quite mature, independent, and self-possessed to cut it at Andover, where it's easy to feel lost among the more than 160 buildings and 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],069 students. "There's no hand-holding here," says Will Scharf, 15,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a pint-size freshman in a ratty T-shirt from New York City, as he scarfs down pizza in his dorm.
While the school's unofficial motto has long been "sink or swim," Andover is adding structure and support: The school is at the tail end of downsizing from 1,223 students in 1992 to 1,065 this year and has lowered the residential student-teacher ratio in larger dorms from 20 to 1 to 12 to 1. Dorms are organized into five "clusters," each a neighborhood of some 200 students and 40 faculty families within the larger school,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to encourage more of a community feeling and sense of belonging among teens, and there's a spate of new rules on campus. A strong academic advising system helps to keep better track of students and to place them in classes according to their abilities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not their age; this year, for example, there are freshmen taking AP-level European history and calculus.
