Northern suburbs family killed in Victorian road crash,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
A 48-year-old woman and her 25-year-old daughter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], both from Wynn Vale, and the daughter's 24-year-old boyfriend,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from Salisbury East,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], died instantly in the crash at Middle Creek,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], about 60km west of Ballarat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], on Friday night.
Police believe the car,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], driven by the young man,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], veered on to the wrong side of the Western Hwy about 11pm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], colliding head-on with a B-double semi-trailer.
A second truck travelling behind the first narrowly avoided the collision,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but a third semi-trailer crashed into the carnage. The victims' identities had not been revealed last night,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it is believed the family had been heading for a weekend away.
The car's boot was full of undamaged personal belongings - two pink Betty Boop pillows and suitcases full of untouched clothes. The Adelaide driver of the third truck involved in the crash was still in shock yesterday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but said a split-second decision to veer into the second truck may have saved his life.
The truckie - who injured his leg in the smash - said nothing could be done to save the occupants of the car. "I don't know how I feel yet. It's pretty full on,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," the driver,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who did not want to be named,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said. "I could have gone into the car or the first truck so I chose to go into the side of the other one.
"It all happened in seconds. It was like The Flintstones,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I was pedalling my feet to the floor that fast just to try and stop."
Another Adelaide truckie,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Michael Harvey,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was one of the first to arrive at the crash.
"The (truck) drivers were walking around shocked and dazed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but there was nothing we could do for those in the car,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said. "It's one of the worst crashes I've seen - up there in the nine out of 10 mark."
