We had an appointment at 10am. Three of us from Shaftesbury Home Grown to meet three residents from Umbers Hill. In the kitchen was Paul, Peter and Neville. They offered us a drink and we asked for water. Without much ado Paul outlined his main objection which was polytunnels that would intrude on his view. Peter was worried about parking and Neville was, I think,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just generally concerned.
Paul had some photocopies of newspaper articles written about the nuisance of polytunnels. He went upstairs to show Joan and Clive out of his bedroom window. I remained with Neville and Peter and hopefully laid their car parking fears to rest. I said that we did not want anyone to park on a single track, narrow lane either. I could not put in writing, however, because I have no statutory powers.
The upstairs posse came down. We regrouped by the kitchen table and reminded ourselves that life is about reasonableness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], understanding, flexibility and dialogue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that reaching a mutually acceptable solution should surely be possible.
We strolled out into the field. I chatted with Neville behind the others. He told me some of the history of the place. As a Shastonian,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he knew who lived where and when since the days when Umber Hill was the site of the old town workhouse.
Jonathan and Catherine happened to be passing with their dogs. More introductions and we chatted further. In the end we agreed to all go away,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], think on,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], re-meet at a later date and see if any positions had or could be shifted even slightly.
Clive and Joan had been working on the assumption of three tunnels. I don know of what size. My opinion remains that we should start small and grow into something bigger if that is how reality develops,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I think that one tunnel for a relatively simple crop (like salads) will test the resolve of a volunteer collective enough to establish if the project has any substance beyond enthusiasm and good intentions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Not annoying the neighbours is an essential element of foundation laying for Shaftesbury Home Grown. We all have our realities so it not always fair to pass judgement on the value of what people think when their opinions differ from your own.
