Valentines Day is the second most celebrated holiday globally after New Years. To us today, Valentines Day is the day we celebrate love, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] where we take time out to focus on a loved one or to send a hint to the object of our desires. We celebrate it by sending cards, chocolates, jewellery or taking that someone special out for a romantic date.
But where does Valentines [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Day originate? One would assume it started with two star crossed lovers or a pagan celebration of love, however its real origins are religious, anti-establishment romance ending in sadness.
The day is named after Valentine, the Bishop of Terni in Italy. Saint Valentine was [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] born in Terni at the end of the second century. The name Valentine comes from the latin 'valere' which means 'feel good' and the Saint was famous among his contemporaries its healing powers through faith.
Valentine was believed to have performed marriages for people who were not allowed to get married. In Roman society, there were many people who were not allowed to marry. Those without parental consent, soldiers or slaves would have found it difficult if not impossible however Valentine stood up [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] against the establishment and performed the ceremonies anyway, giving the happy couples flowers from his garden. This practice survives today with flowers being given as a present one of the main traditions on Valentines Day.
Valentines actions [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] brought him into opposition with the Emperor Aurelius and the establishment who were persecuting Christians at the time. Valentine's actions and refusal to change his religious views led to his execution on 14 February 269AD. He was buried on a hill outside the city [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] walls of Terni where the Basilica [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] of St. Valentine, built in 1605, now stands. The town of Terni celebrates their Patron with a calendar of events called 'Eventi valentiniani' which includes music, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] art, exhibitions and more. The city of Terni proclaimed Valentine as Patron Saint of the City [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and patron saint of lovers in 1644.
Valentine was chosen by the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] church as the protector of lovers and there are many wonderful anecdotes swirling around him, his actions and the impact he made on peoples lives. History is also beset with references and evolving traditions surrounding Valentines Day. Charles, Duke of Orleans sent a letter to his "valentined" wife from the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Agincourt (1415) whilst Shakespeare's Ophelia sings of "Valentine's Day" as a day on which maids lose their virginity (1600-1601). The practice of sending valentine cards on 14th February seems to date to the 1840s in America.
