PICOS DE EUROPA NATIONAL PARK

Considered as the First National Park in Spain, this group of three massifs (Oriental massif, also known as Andara Massif, ,or Urrielles Massif [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and Occidental Massif, known as Cornion Massif) [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] has been declared by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve. It has 64.660 hectares of terrain.

This area is then a natural place that since Neolithic times, with the first settlements, then the Celts, Arabs, the Middle Age, till our times, has seen the beginnings of animal domestication, land cultivation, different gods and goddesses adoration, defensive constructions as well as churches and monasteries, in a land that has always been wild and scenery of battles, like the famous battle of Covadonga against the Arab domination. Cattle and chase have been since the beginning a natural resource in this park. The ecosystem in this area of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Spain reaches the Atlantic forests and wild animals can be found here, like wolfs, some bears, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] roe deer's, wild boars, more than one hundred bird species, like the capercaillie, for example. Royal eagles and other [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] birds of prey can be seen here, a place to enjoy nature [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] at the highest level. Many plans and works are followed here in order to maintain and keep the wild fauna, flora and animals that since [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] centuries inhabit this land, like the recovery of the white tailed eagle, the capercaillie consevation, the observation of some amphibian species, fluvial studies, conservation of Basque Flora, butterflies, etc.

Nowadays, the inhabitants adapt their work to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the land in order to produce cheese, a natural food that has become famous and vast. Cheese is fermented inside old caves and the names of Cabrales, Cangas Picon de Valdeon cheese are most enjoyed by gourmets.
