Blackhawk chopper crews flew through shocking weather and at night to rescue dozens of residents trapped by the flash flooding,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The machines are not equipped with navigation systems which include Google Maps and their precision global positioning system (GPS) relies on latitude and longitude and map coordinates to guide them to any location but they are not equipped to fly to street addresses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
During the floods people were calling in street and roadside property addresses and the quickest way to find them was with the Google Mapsbased GPS software fitted to iPhones and other handheld devices.
Some chopper crews complained the aircraft systems were not suited to the type of search and rescue operation that unfolded in the emergency,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
A senior military officer told The Advertiser that the Blackhawk was a battlefield helicopter not set up for civilian search and rescue missions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"This is not a failure of the system," he said.
He said the fact that crews safely used their initiative by using personal communication devices was a positive.
"That is what we would expect them to do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," the officer said. "They used their common sense and in the interest of saving lives they adapted their kit."
