2012 Flash Fiction shortlist
It has been an exceptional year for science, with news of the Higgs boson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the appearance of the Curiosity rover on Mars and recent changes to our knowledge of our very own origins, to mention just a few major developments. In the pages of recent Scientist we now have explored these and many other fascinating stories - in the inner workings of memory towards the very nature of reality.

And there wasn't any shortage of inspired imaginings: nearly 130 readers submitted activly works to this season science-inspired flash fiction competition. Below is the to begin the five.

In closer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], alcohol glazes their eyes, shared spittle glistens their lips from previous happy engagement.
I flex my hands through the city infrastructure,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], knuckles cracking through intersects and power-stops, ease into her family room.
She steps through the threshold first, him behind. Giggling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], swaying. Soft light sneaks through the house. Web cam [digital zoom, pixel enhancement] focuses pert breasts.
Sleep issues of town [fibre optic cable path under their town hall],[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], larger breasts jiggle on the dance floor. Speed fuels the dancers onwards, circling during the night round Gucci bags. Bearded men line the walls,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], eyeing their prey, rating their chances. Sober bartenders smile dryly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], accepting notes and alter,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], awaiting the long night to come to its inevitably messy end.
Outside a grainy image outlines a man recently de-blanketed, arms covering his head as young boots tenderise his stomach. A light flicks on above them; mother involves your window,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], baby cries. She shouts in the group below before slamming the shutters closed.
Late night city traders click signals in to the network, produce a shoal of emails; one "Kind regards", two "Apologies for the delay" followed by a "Formal written warning". The man at the end of the email queue stands about the edge of the high rise block,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], looking down past his shoes to cars lining the road [switch to record mode,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], push feed to news-net]. He looks up, wind tugging his jacket - steps into nothing.
On the street a policeman looks away,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], winces in the wet crack about the pavement. He nods to his partner who radios for the ambulance crew [static crackles along spine]. They stand together, blue lights strobing their faces. Burning coffee,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 65p in the cafe's vending machine, waits for them on the jam sandwich dashboard.
