minute decision leads to life of leisure for 13 lucky lotto winners from Edmonton
EDMONTON - On a whim, Patricia Podridske passed the hat. On Friday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she and 12 colleagues hit the motherlode.
The 13 - winners of a near-record $50-million Lotto 6-49 jackpot - were driven to a downtown hotel in stretch limousines to a ballroom packed with cheering family members to be announced the nation's newest multimillionaires,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"It's just one of those things where it's just something that was just spontaneous,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Podridske,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], recalling how she and colleague Cheryl Chrapko came to buy the tickets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which will see each winner take home $3.8 million.
"It was just like,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], '(Let's) collect some money,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], let's go to the store,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], get some tickets and let's just see what happens.
"You would never ever guess that you would have the only winning ticket in this type of lottery in that amount of money,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
The 11 women and two men - technicians and staffers with the ATB Financial's human resources department - won the third largest jackpot in Canadian history and the second-largest claimed with a single winning ticket,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The 13 work on the 13th floor of their downtown office tower,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but Podridske said the numbers are just coincidence.
"How did we end up with 13 people in the lottery,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I don't know. That's just the way it goes."
"I've never been superstitious about anything,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
All 13 said they're going to remain with the bank, and all went to work Friday morning before heading to the news conference.
Many admitted the shock of the win had not sunk in,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that they had not thought about how they were going to spend the windfall beyond paying off debts and mortgages and helping family.
Well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], actually,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], some have plans.
"Maybe I'll buy an island,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Emma MacEachern.
"Probably buy a lot of shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," laughed Sara Gabriel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], adding she's getting married and can now afford a honeymoon in Paris. This win just happens to put that on the fast track,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
Podridske said they don't usually buy lottery tickets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but when she came to work Wednesday morning and saw the Lotto 6-49 jackpot had reached $49.85 million, she decided it was worth going in.
She emailed colleagues to see who wanted to kick in a toonie,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Twelve people responded.
Gabriel wavered: "I actually wasn't going to put in $2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but right at the last second I just had a strong feeling. I'm pretty happy I did."
Podridske and Chrapko zipped over to a nearby newsstand before the lotto machines got busy with other last-minute buyers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"Good luck,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], good luck, good luck!" Podridske recalled the clerk telling her while handing them five tickets for their $25 purchase.
"She had a big smile on her face and her eyes were really sparkly and I just took that as a good sign."
About 12 hours later,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], their world was turned upside down when Carmina Cruz's husband and son bounded in to tell her the winning numbers matched the ones on one ticket.
She phoned Chrapko,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who told her to give her head a shake.
"I said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], `No,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], c'mon. What are you talking about?' It took her 15 minutes to convince me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Chrapko.
The calls flew back and forth among five of them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], trying to verify the ticket that remained locked in Podridske's desk at work.
"We were going a little crazy. No sleep or anything,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Chrapko.
The next morning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the 13 checked the numbers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], booked themselves into a conference room,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], called the lottery people on the speaker phone and found out they were millionaires.
