Do high heels cause bunions
High heels will never be the podiatrist's footwear of choice, but have you heard that everyone with a passion for stilettos will end up with bunions? Is that really the case?
Well, there is some uncertainty over the cause of bunions, says Andrew Schox, president of the Australasian Podiatry Council,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the evidence suggests high heels are not the real culprit.
"Wearing high heels forces the weight of your body onto the ball of your foot, and if you are wearing narrow shoes, this force then compacts your toes into a small space which may encourage bunions to form,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and may exacerbate problems associated with existing bunions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Schox says.
What is a bunion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?A bunion is essentially a lump on the joint at the base of your big toe (the metatarsolphalangeal joint),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The lump seen with bunions can happen when the big toe changes angle, drifting towards the other toes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a condition known medically as hallux valgus.
A bunion can also form at the base of your little toe sometimes referred to a tailor's bunion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or a bunionette.
Bunions can be incredibly sore and painful, and it can be difficult to move your affected toe.
The way you moveSchox says that for most people, bunions are due to the way they walk rather than the shoes they wear.
Our walk, or our gait, is influenced by many factors, some of which are inherited.
For instance, people who have flat feet are more likely to develop bunions as are those with very flexible or hypermobile joints. These conditions predispose the foot to developing a bunion and associated conditions such as arthritis.
Being a woman makes you more likely to have bunions, as does getting older.
Damage limitationBunions can be corrected surgically,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but there are also conservative treatments available, such as shoe inserts (orthotics),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which can help your foot to function normally. He spoke to Rebecca Jenkins.

how timely - Last week I had a bunionectomy as a doctor called it. Involved slicing off the bunion and reconstructing the second toe. Only one foot - but it was in the female side of the family in both feet but not my mother. I had very narrow feet so have always been fitted with narrow shoes - AA. I understood that high heeled shoes were to blame but listening to the ABC report it would appear that confinement was more to blame than height. Whatever, I love the ABC health report for raising so many releveant and interesting reports. Let there be more of them.

I suffer from bunions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but don't suffer pain unless it is going to rain. I find Bowen Therapy good for the mobilisation of the joint, also soaking my feet in Epsom Salts can be of benefit. As for the hard skin that sometimes accompanies the problem, I also soak my feet in 1 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar 1 cup of hot water. This remedy will take away pain in the joint as well. Massage is also very good particulary for the legs, as the hamstrings gastrocs can shorten with high heels. It is hereditary, my grandmother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], mother my niece has them. I have high arches, so flat feet aren't necessarily a trigger for bunions. I wear mostly really good shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with slight eletion when I go out. The heels of the youth now are quite ridiculous, very dangerous. Common sense is really needed with ones health. I hope some of the young ones read your comments take heed.
I'm nearly 60.
I have a bunion on the left foot. Big toe takes a significant deviation towards the other toes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Has never caused pain and I have no trouble walking.
Skin under bunion is very thick and cracked. Have always worn good shoes (never high heels).
BUT my mother had a bunion in exactly the same place. I think genetics explains it all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unless it was the X-Ray machines (fluoroscopes) chemist shops used to have where you could get on and look at your bones. My mother told me that she used to love looking at her feet on those machines,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I can't remember whether she said she used to put me on the machine to look at my bones.
